Airglide™ Air Lubrication Systems

Verifiable designs...
...verifiable results

Air lubrication systems — which create a layer of air bubbles below the ship hull — are rapidly gaining popularity within the global maritime community for good reason. Realize real-world, in-service, operational fuel reductions of up to 10%.

Airglide™ Air Lubrication Systems from Shipwright LLC are calibrated, optimized, and verified in our proprietary, full-scale Boundary Layer Test Laboratory before deployment to your vessel.

Our designs are tailor-made and optimized for your specific vessels using the results of physical measurements in our BLT Laboratory with world-class, cutting-edge computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software.

Our design process allows Shipwright and the client to see the power savings and verify ALS design before installation occurs.

We address the many complexities and challenges involved in the design of these systems and the physical phenomena of optimizing resistance reduction provided by an air lubrication system is very conditional and case specific.

On installation, our Airglide™ systems are verified with computational and statistical big data analysis by our industry leading in-house scientists, engineers and programmers.

The air bubble lubrication phenomenon cannot be tested in traditional ship model tow tanks. Neither the air bubble formation and shape, which are governed by surface tension among other non-scaling physics, nor the turbulence modifying mechanism by which those bubbles reduce viscous drag within the boundary layer, scale with traditional scale model tow tank testing.

Once installed on a ship, measuring the achieved results of an ALS is also very difficult. In collecting performance data, the immense quantity of spurious data readily masks the relevant data.

The big data experts at Shipwright have the education, training, experience, tools, and capability to filter and synthesize this data for accurate and precise performance monitoring feedback.

Verifiable designs...

Traditional ALS design forced the ship owner to make a leap of faith in going from CFD design to full-scale installation — there has been no way to generate empirical data to substantiate the design or the anticipated results.

Shipwright is the only ALS designer with a purpose-built, proprietary, Boundary Layer Test (BLT) Lab that provides empirical validation prior to fleet deployment. This allows you, our customer, to receive verifiable designs.

Further challenge is to accurately measure the contribution and performance of the air lubrication system once installed on a ship operating in service on regular commercial revenue voyages.

Collecting ship data to measure performance gains in the desired 2–10% improvement range of a typical ALS installation is extremely difficult. Changing ship speeds, headings, sea states, wind direction and velocity, auxiliary loads, and hull and propeller fouling — all these factors and more result in enormous amounts of extraneous noise that overwhelms the relevant performance data.

The team at Shipwright includes published, world-renowned scientific experts on big data analysis. The Shipwright team can study the in-service operation of air lubrication systems and accurately provide you, our customer, verifiable results.

Airglide™ from Shipwright

The Complete Picture

1. Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)ANALYSIS

Shipwright utilizes premier CFD software and hardware with in-house staff to analyze client’s ships for installation of our Airglide™ systems. Read more about Shipwright's CFD approach.

2. Specialized Testing Facilities FOR DESIGN VERIFICATION

Shipwright has developed a one-of-a-kind testing facility designed to simulate real-world conditions at the bottom of a ship hull. Our Boundary Layer Testing (BLT) Laboratory allows us to analyze bubble interactions with hull plating and to precisely determine the effects of these interactions. Using data acquired from such tests, Shipwright can validate and calibrate predictions and tune CFD model physics as necessary to develop the most accurate and effective solutions. Read more about our BLT Laboratory.

3. ALS System DESIGN optimization

The air supply system is an integral part of the Airglide™ ALS and must be designed to meet the unique requirements of each installation. Maximizing the efficiency of the air system while delivering the air to the optimal injection points is the key to optimizing the efficiency of the entire air lubrication system. Read more about Airglide™ system optimization.

4. BIG DATA ANALYSIS FOR VERIFIABLE RESULTS

Resolving and analyzing profuse amounts of operational data to determine and monitor the installed contribution of an ALS system is non-trivial. The Shipwright team provides an accurate, precise, and verifiable result for all Airglide™ systems. For more information about Shipwright Airglide™ data analysis.

5. ALS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS & PATENTS

Air Lubrication Systems are a technology with both decades old prior art and existing and current patents. A complete understanding of the specifics of the intellectual property and patents of the art are critical for successful commercial implementation. Read more about ALS IP rights and patents.

6. GETTING STARTED — implementation

Shipwright has extensive experience in project management for major system installations in addition to ALS including scrubbers, ECA Fuel Line Modifications, Additional Diesel Generators (ADG), and managing commercial diving operations including discharge and sea chest installations and hull coating maintenance. This expertise can be applied to your Airglide™ ALS installations to ensure smooth and efficient transition from concept to operation.
