The air bubble lubrication phenomenon cannot be tested in traditional ship model tow tanks. Neither the air bubble formation and shape, which are governed by surface tension among other non-scaling physics, nor the turbulence modifying mechanism by which those bubbles reduce viscous drag within the boundary layer, scale with traditional scale model tow tank testing.
Once installed on a ship, measuring the achieved results of an ALS is also very difficult. In collecting performance data, the immense quantity of spurious data readily masks the relevant data.
The big data experts at Airglide have the education, training, experience, tools, and capability to filter and synthesize this data for accurate and precise performance monitoring feedback.
Traditional ALS design forced the ship owner to make a leap of faith in going from CFD design to full-scale installation — there has been no way to generate empirical data to substantiate the design or the anticipated results.
Airglide is the only ALS designer with a purpose-built, proprietary, Boundary Layer Test (BLT) Lab that provides empirical validation prior to fleet deployment. This allows you, our customer, to receive verifiable designs.
Further challenge is to accurately measure the contribution and performance of the air lubrication system once installed on a ship operating in service on regular commercial revenue voyages.
Collecting ship data to measure performance gains in the desired 2–10% improvement range of a typical ALS installation is extremely difficult. Changing ship speeds, headings, sea states, wind direction and velocity, auxiliary loads, and hull and propeller fouling — all these factors and more result in enormous amounts of extraneous noise that overwhelms the relevant performance data.

2. Specialized Testing Facilities FOR DESIGN VERIFICATION
Airglide has developed a one-of-a-kind testing facility designed to simulate real-world conditions at the bottom of a ship hull. Our Boundary Layer Testing (BLT) Laboratory allows us to analyze bubble interactions with hull plating and to precisely determine the effects of these interactions.
